Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day!

Do you want to get inshape, feel better, and make some small changes that will impact your life positively in a big way? Great- you’re in the right place! This week, we’ll be featuring several blogs that address small changes you can make in your eating habits to get fit and feel better.
We’re all looking for a deeper connection to the Lord, but sometimes our daily habits can block our ability to receive direction and help from the Divine. Let’s think about it for a second…can you commune with Jesus while eating junk
food and watching TV?
Can you hear that still, small voice inside when you’re listening to a new song on your iPod or talking on your cell phone? Maybe you can- if so, I wish you’d tell me how! I find that I can’t connect with my spiritual side at all unless I’m feeling healthy and spending some “unplugged” time outside, away from the distractions of work and the stress of modern life. That being said, no one wants to spend hours at the gym or change everythingabout their lifestyle all at once. Diets don’t work because most diet programs ask you to change everything, NOW! This is a scary thought, and for most of us, it isn’t manageable or realistic to make momentous changes overnight. What really happens is the thought of changing everything is too scary, and then we don’t change anything at all! Rome wasn’t built in a day- and you won’t find better health and a deeper spiritual connection in the next 5 minutes. That’s the bad news- it’s not a quick fix.

Here’s the good news- I’m NOT going to tell you to go on a diet and lose a
bunch of weight. This isn’t a blog about dieting and weight loss; it’s about
feeling better, making healthier choices, and deepening our connection with
God. You can still eat all of your favorite foods- I personally couldn’t live
without pizza- but we’ll talk about making some small changes in your eating
habits that can make a real difference in your health.

First, we’ll discuss the importance of water and staying hydrated. We’ll also talk about some web resources you can check out, with links to several excellent websites I’ve found. Then, we’ll look at making some healthier choices for your snacks andmeals. I’m going to ask you to make some small changes to your diet, ubstituting healthier foods for your tried and true favorites a few times a eek. Later this week, guest blogger Molly Childers will be consulting with a professional chef for this summer’s hottest healthy recipes. Stay tuned for their great ideas for healthy meals- and some dynamite recipes.

One of the things I’ve discovered is that water is a very important part of our
diet. Staying hydrated can keep you from feeling false hunger- those little
pangs you get when you’re really thirsty aren’t a sign to start snacking. It’s
actually a distress signal your body sends to your brain when you’re getting
dehydrated! If you get hungry between meals, drink a big glass of water instead of hitting the fridge. Wait about fifteen to twenty minutes. If you’re still hungry, grab a snack. If you’re not, that means you were just really thirsty- your body needed water, not food.

It’s important to drink enough water so that our bodies function well. Eight
8-ounce glasses of water per day is optimum- try it this week and see how you
feel! A glass of water with meals has been shown to aid in proper digestion.
Let’s try drinking water with meals instead of other beverages for just a week,
and see if you feel healthier. I’m not saying you have to give up drinking your
favorite beverages- just enjoy them between meals instead and see if that makes a shift in your health.

Don’t want to drink water at breakfast? How about a cup of ginger tea? It’s delicious, and ginger is known to support healthy digestive functions. Need a caffeine fix? Instead of coffee, try red, black, or green tea in the mornings. You’ll still be getting a little pick-me-up, without the mid-afternoon caffeine crash. Here are a few web resources for you. Internet, check out these great health sites!
